Someone Died Today

Feeling brainless. I can’t write. I can barely think let alone type something pithy and interesting.

I am laying here in bed trying to think of what I want to say and all I can think is that I want to squirt more whipped cream straight from the can and into my mouth. I am an emotional eater.

A friend of mine had a loved one die in Iraq today. She is devastated and there is nothing I can do. I can listen while she talks, try and offer words of comfort, but what will it really do? He will never come home again.

I lay here thinking about friends, still friends even with extreme political and moral differences from my own, but friends the same who are still supporting this war. They are supporting this war out of some blind feeling that this is the only way to be patriotic, to be a true American. To follow blindly, to ask no questions, to basically be a sheep led to slaughter.

As my friend’s loved one was.

Regardless of beliefs, regardless of political party, we must never, NEVER stop asking why, never stop questioning authority. To question, to know, to be educated and informed… THAT is being an American.

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.” - Buddha

I’m so sorry. Listening does much more than you may think. Just being there can make a huge difference. My condolences to your friend and their family.

I am sorry for your friend; I agree with you.

Just know that though there isn’t much you can say, you can listen, and you can just *be there for your friend. It speaks volumes. It is ok to be uncomfortable, just work through it.
